POEM

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

This poem emerged from a quick writing sesion in the first Pakistani Night the Plymouth Writing Project had during the Invitational Summer Writing Institute in Plymouth, New Hampshire in 2009.  After the session, I did not know what to write as an assignment that had been given in my writing group. My partner, Nelsy Aldebot suggested me to change my paragraph about The Amazon into a poem due to she had seen a lot of poetry in it.  I started shapping my poem that night.  Later on, I posted in the National Writing Project e-Anthology and received feedback from participants in other summer writing institutes in the United States.  I hope you read it and I will really appreciate your feedback.

THE AMAZON

Máximo Encarnación G.

Magic place
I haven’t been there, but I have somehow.
I can feel this vast piece of nature in my blood.

Oh, the river with her name, The Amazon River.
Its waters flow in my veins
like the waters in Río Yaque del Sur
irrigating dry forgotten lands in the Dominican Republic.
Letting life flow is their sacred commitment.

There is an eternal connection
between me and The Amazon,
the extended territory that
softly touches
Brazil, Chile, Venezuela....
These places help me breathe.

I feel you
beating inside my lungs
I see your rain falling in my tears.
I love you
for what you are,
a precious part of our green and brown
and black and yellow and white planet.

You, The Amazon,
live in my heart and in my tears.
I don’t know why
they don’t leave you alone.
Why
are they cutting
one of the most important veins
of our mother earth?
Don’t they know
that with your death
the whole humankind vanishes, too?

One day,
every breathing creature will wake up
and, with happy-wet-wide-open eyes
see that they will have stopped forever
that angry rush against you,
against all of us!

THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF MY LIFE

By: Dileidy I. Tavárez Vasquez

It is difficult for me to start writing about the three most important aspects of my life, because I am a shy person. But I consider that this is a way to let something of me go out.  As a way to become known as the person I am.  Not the one people think or see. I have things that define me, aspects of me that I consider important to run on my life. They represent my whole existence on earth. In fact, they are a big part of what builds and constitutes my personality and my way of being.
First of all, one of the most important aspects of my life is the commitment I have as a daughter. I know my parents expect a lot of things from me. They expect that I achieve success in life. My parents are always teaching me how things work and how I should behave. They also advise me that I should work hard to become a better person, not only spiritually but also professionally. Moreover, they say I should feel and think about other people’s pains and struggles to make the difference. To achieve this, I must be constant and behave in the right way, no matter what life brings.
Besides what has been said previously, my goal as a student has become a challenge for me. I decided to give the most and the best of me, so that I could overcome all my weaknesses to convert them into strength. I know that this way, I can build myself as a very good professional. Being a student is a very hard work, in which, at the end, it gives its rewards, depending on your effort. Knowledge and joy are keys to success. In addition to that, in my life as a student, I have faced lots of difficulties, but at the same time, I have learned how to overcome them. Three years and a half ago, I made the decision of starting studying in two different universities, UCNE (Universidad Católica Nordestana) and CURNE (Centro Universitario Regional del Nordeste). At first, it was hard for me, but I didn’t set a limit to myself. I was going beyond my expectations and I was aware of that, so I challenged myself and my capacity. All my time was invested on that. I didn’t have time to have fun or share with my family and friends. I never regreted of making that decision. All the effort I made was rewarded with having successfully completed and accomplished my goal. I Graduated and was honored Magna Cum Laude at UCNE, which makes my family and I proud due to what I have earned with effort and enthusiasm.
As a complement of the aspects mentioned, what I am planning to accomplish as a professional is and will be to prepare myself as much as I can. That’s why, as soon as I finished my career I started thinking of persuing a masters degree as a means to keep growing, to widen my knowledge, and to continue opening as many doors as possible. That’s the only mode people have to grow and reach the aims they really want in life. Consequently, the more you study, the more capacity you acquire to deal with life and your job. In my case, I am a high school teacher. And if I prepare myself as much as I can, I will be able to help my students acquire knowledge, awareness, and also grow not only intellectually but mentally.  I always take my father for granted because he is a great professional and has succeeded in life. He is always telling me that I should make a big effort if I want to reach my goals in life. When people make big efforts, they are rewarded somehow at the end of the road. Future professionals should take advantage of time. They should invest it in activities that are really worth it in life.
To sum up, being a member of my family has given me strengths. However it has given me weaknesses, too. My parents have given me the opportunity to learn a lot of things about life and the importance to build myself a person of knowledge. In fact, their advise have helped me grow and constitute myself as a person of challenge, not paying attention to difficulties, but just in overcoming them. Therefore, I am sure that the future has many promising things for me because I learned that success is earned by making a big effort. I have done a big one, which was rewarded with honor. Life has many advantages and disadvantages, but we should face life with courage and enthusiasm, doing things that will be rewarded somehow.

Poem in English

The Only Hope
Maricela Martínez
2003

The day became dark as a heavy raining night.
Stared at figure disappearing in the distance
in the horizon a tiny figure was as a shooting star in the sky.
a sudden stab of pain in my heart I felt.
dark clouds began to spring up the entire surrounding
I looked for way to have a bit of light

After I see him off, dense tears rolled on my cheek.
no Jellyfish is happy when out of the see.
there is no peace for my soul after the storm began
you’ re leaving me forever and that’s the way it should be.
you heart is so tight that is out of my reach.

At any rate, I will hold in my wish of crossing the border
I will put up with my need of seeing the light of the sun
I will plead God to look after you while I am away
but no matter how far you are, in the sadness of my life
the memory of your eyes will be always in my mind

Like a ghost I feel, living in the dead
breathing, just to satisfy a need
stormy feelings of emotion burst from my heart
a big silence cover the scene and in the sadness
of my dreams we will never be apart

And when the time passes by, in the deepest recesses of my heart
I’ ll hope with my soul that you still belong to me as
I will always belong to you.

POEM: HAITI

AUTHOR’S NOTES:

The poem, HAITI  was published by the Plymouth Writing Project in the Summer Writing Institute Anthology 2010.  This poem is the result of quick writing sessions with my students on the weekend that followed the earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010.  The sessions took place at CURNE -Centro Universitario Regional del Nordeste- (Regional University Center in the Northeast).  This is a branch of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (Autónomous University in Santo Domingo) and it is located in San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic.  My students wrote very interesting paragraphs and just poems came out of my heart. I do not know why.  Out of all my poetry drafts, I chose one to share with my partners in a writing club.  They gave me very valuable feedback.  Later on, I shared the poem in a writing session at the Summer Writing Institute in Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA and my partners gave me more feedback. This time, I am sharing it with my students, followers, and viewers in general through this blog.  After you read it, I would like to receive your feedback in terms of what you like, the questions it arises, and things to consider in order to improve it.

Thanks for taking time to visit this blog.

HAITI

By Máximo Encarnación Gomera

“A time to love...and a time for peace.”  (Eccl. 3:8)

Strong breath and courage
lying next to me
Eternal joys:
Dances in the streets,
happy cries of instruments
kettledrums embracing accordions
singing with their hearts
Oh! Africa, our beloved

Heroic Tousaint’s blood is mixed
with brave Lemba and De Ocampo’s
Beautiful Anacaona and Iguaniona’s
Enriquillo and Caonabo’s

Great shine opens
multicolored skies
spread by the sun
heating ebony skin
speaking up through the times:
Black is beautiful!

Feet tread back and forth
stepping on the dirt
One side and the other
Parted the island
over the brook
with clear waters
and a sad name

Yellowish dust
covers many eyes
Believe it or not
Same hunger, same struggle
same love
Same bright future
scribbled on foreheads

Nature flows commonly
like blood through the veins
Mother nurtures sons and daughters
with delicious rice, beans, meat
Tasty plantains, yucca, corn
coconut water
refreshing their souls

Now you are
a strong reason
to sing and not to cry
Remember the words
I whispered in your ears?
Remember that sorrowful evening
right before spring?
Remember when I told you
that in a glorious time
you would re-emerge
and then we would dance
