The Foreign Languages Socialization Meeting

by: Orinson Fco. Pichardo

May 24th was the last day for The Foreign Languages Socialization Meeting this year. There were songs in English and some songs in French, dramas, power point presentations, and explenation about English speaking countries. Many teachers participated with their students from the distrit 16-03, Cevicos.

My students did a great job, having in the stage a presentator; Brenny, two singers; Rucheiry and Luz Ester, and three boys who participated in a dramatization; Joan, Luis and Cristian. The Foreign Languages Socialization Meeting was a talent show, giving to the fans a nice time. Teacher Nona was a nice guest for this event.

The teacher Rosa Fco. Ramirez from the highschool Socorro del Rosario Sanchez presented great numbers: Luz del Alba was the singer, Roseily was the expositor, and a group of students named Chorus Socorro Sanchez sang a song, in which Wilfran, Chuko, Neribel, Smarlin and Joselito performed.

The last song, in order to close this event, was performed by Ramona, who was an interchange student in this festival. I was the person selected to play the guitar for her.

The musician were: Orinson; playing the guitar, Jose and Angeury; in the drummer, giving the best of everyone in the stage.

In my personal opinion, everything was wonderful. I could notice what young talents can do, and that I have to improve myself day and day, because those guys time and time are increasing in English language.

I must to greet to Daneira and her student Leidy; who was a presentator too. Thanks to my photographers: Nelly and Yane Yan, In special to my technician Felix Garcia who is one of the best person that I know. Also I have to thank to Maximo for being my English teacher at the university and allowed me to post these information that I hope you like it.

ENGLISH COMPOSITION STUDENTS POST ON BULLETIN BOARD

Hello everyone,

I teach English Composition I at Centro Universitario Regional del Nordeste (Regional University Center in the Northeast), CURNE.  This is a branch of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (Autonomous University in Santo Domingo), UASD located to the Northeast of the Dominican Republic. My students and I work on writing and basic research along the whole semester.  They choose a subject at the beginning of the course and start working on it.  In the classroom, along with the theoretical background for composing, we follow the writing process.  We generate ideas, revise, give and receive feedback... In their communities, they gather information through interviews, observation, and so on.  The result is a five-paragraph essay.

This semester, I assigned them to find out and write about their lives.  The essays were ready for this end of semester an here are some images of my students and the posting of their works on the bulletin board. I hope you enjoy them.

Máximo

Brains, hearts, and pens at work

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO CONTRIBUTORS OR AUTHORS

Hi, dear contributors or authors of MAXETEACHING,
It is wonderful to have you as authors in this great tool to develop our writing skills.  First of all, I would like to thank and, at the same time, congratulate the first group of contributors for the effort made in their Composition Class.  The bulletin board on the first floor in Building C at CURNE in San Francisco de Macorís in the Dominican Republic shows your high quality as writers.  As I told you in class, from now on, the students in my literature and composition classes will become contributors or authors of this blog.  The idea is to have a community of writers with them.  They will be able to publish their writing in English and give and receive feedback to one another's works.  By the way, I encourage you to give more feedback to the works that have been posted so far.  I also expect for your comments to the images and texts I have published. Do not be shy! This blog is ours and we need to take advantage of it. One last thing, Once you become a contributor, you can publish your writing and, if you want, you can acompany it with something visual such as a photo, chart, drawing, or so on.  As for me, besides my writing, I will be posting images and texts of the activities I carry on with my students and other related events.
I am so happy for this new improvement in my teaching and learning process!
Thank you very much!
Máximo
P.S.: KEEP ON SPREADING THIS GOOD NEWS!
THE ENGLISH SPEAKING COMMUNITY WILL BE PLEASED AND THANKFULL

My life

By Orinson Fco. Pichardo

My life is an interesting one. Writing about me is important because I can find information about myself. It helps me to know how special I am. Writing about myself as an English student makes me compare my skills with other students and improve. Also, to be a painter is an interesting hobby to spend time and people can know me very well. Besides, playing the guitar is a great pass time and also it can be a motivation for others to get the same hobby. Writing about me could be interesting for the future when I die; this way, people get information about me.

English is one of the best things that I could achieve. My English has its own history. I started studying it when I was thirteen. At present, I am studying it. When TV cable was developing, there was a TV in my house and I used to watch a lot of interesting movies in English, but I could not understand a word. That pushed me to study. Nowadays, English is my career. It became one of the most important goals in my life. I am learning it because I can talk to people from English speaking countries and understand them. I have to study harder day by day. I want to be a good English speaker and be successful in this field. Thanks heaven for having great teachers and nice classmates. These words come from the bottom of my heart and I feel them one by one.

For me, painting is one of the best things to do. It amuses me in my leisure time, giving me a pleasant feeling about myself. I started doing this when I was about nine, drawing comics. My father alwalys used to correct my mistakes, telling me what was wrong and what was ok. All this involved me in the artistic world. In 2006, I attended to an art academy, in which I started with portraits. I will never stop painting. I can not print all the ideas I have in mind. My pictures have to get more expensive day by day, and my biggest wish is to make and exhibition where people can appreciate my works of art. Only my Lord is allowed to stop my career.

Besides English and painting, the guitar is the musical instrument that makes me happy when I need it. My attraction for it and its sound began many years ago when I was a teenager. I just looked for somebody to teach me how to play. It was difficult at first, because strings almost make your finger tips bleed, but if you want to succeed, you have to try and try all the time. I have been in concerts with friends. I have played many times. Nowadays, I am studying a little bit of music. Actually, I play for the church, the Foreign Languages Festival at schools and high schools. I love all this and I would like to perform in a big stage someday. I have a guitar that rests on my bed the whole day. Music is sweet for the soul and deep for the heart.

All in all, my life is a busy one. I do many things at the same time. I am studying English at the university. Sometimes, I paint pictures and play the guitar. My whole life is involved in these and I think I can not stop doing them. I would like a quieter life, but, I am too busy. I can not separate one activity from another. In my opinion, to be busy is not easy, but it is easier than to be lazy. I am a lucky person for being able to do all these things, which not everybody can do.

THREE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS IN MY LIFE

THREE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS IN MY LIFE

By Ana Maria Duarte

I have a wonderful life. I am kind, sociable, and easygoing. I work hard to meet my challenges. Also, in my life, I have learned the importance of being in control. There are positive and negative aspects in our lives, but everyone has the power to face any situation. In fact, the key to success is to have a positive attitude, to have our purpose clear , and to sacrifice. For this reason, I consider that writing about three of the most important aspects in my life is interesting. They are my spirituality, my self determination, and my calmness. Many people misunderstand what to be spiritual means. Also, there are people who confuse spirituality with religion. It is important for people to keep in mind that it is possible to learn how to control ourselves, and have the determination to do whatever we want.

One of the most important aspects in my life is my calmness. It permits me not to make horrible mistakes. I have learned how to be calmed in terrible situations. For example, one day, my baby boy threw a toilet paper into the toilet cup, but I just stood in front of the bathroom, and very calmly, I observed the mess. However, that does not mean I am always calmed. Sometimes, I get annoyed or mad. In fact, I learned that getting mad does not let me think clearly. As a consequence, I can do things that later, I can regret. In addition, calmness is the virtue in which I have the ability to control myself. For me, it is really important to practice it because it keeps me from causing damage to others. Moreover, calmness does not let me act badly while I argue or complain with family, friends, or others. This is a great virtue that people can develop to have a better life style.

Going to church every Sunday, praying every day, doing yoga, meditating or belonging to a religious group does not make me spiritual. I can be a spiritual person when I love myself and others. Besides, I am a spiritual person when I care about animals, nature, and the planet because I know we all live in a single world. There are religious people who are anything, but kind. There are some religious people that are extremely judgmental and righteous, but they are not spiritual. I do not confuse spirituality with religion. As a result, I can be both, religious and spiritual. That is possible when I am operating from my heart, not from my mind. So, my thoughts are kind, and many people can see kindness in my eyes. Surely, I do my best to let kindness be my guiding light. I try to practice kindness toward myself, others, animals, and this beautiful planet that is our home.

My self determination makes me powerful to make decisions without the influence of others. In fact, I can determine what is good or bad for me. Actually, I have learned that life is sacrifice. For example, I have to quit some things to obtain others or stop to live and easy life to work hard to get important things. In addition, I cannot get things by myself without any effort. There are two strong points in my personality. First, I do not give up easily. I fight hard to achieve my goals. So, if I fail any challenge, it is because it was impossible, not because I did not try. Certainly, nobody has to tell me what to do. I am free to make my own decisions, but sometimes, it is good to consider other people´s opinions. However, many times I feel I want to quit what I do, but something strong stops me. Then, I realize I have to fight to meet my challenges. Therefore, I do not let anybody steal my dreams because I have gotten the power to make them come true.

Finally, living a happy life means loving myself, and others. For me loving all the things that have to do with nature, animals, and all kinds of living things, is spiritual. I have the power in my hands to determine what kind of person I want to be. Nobody can decide for me, but some times it is good to consider other opinions. Calmness is the ability or virtue to control myself in front of bad situations. That is why, I practice calmness because it guaranties me I will be successful in life. As a result, I never forget to be humble and have clear goals in life.

My wonderful life

                                      My wonderful life

By Maria Yissell Rosario

My life has been full of wonderful events such as being a mother, a trustful friend, and a student. But most of all, my life has been full of experiences that I call good memories around  people and situations that really make me feel happy. Nowadays, it is difficult for a student like me to distribute time according to every need of  life. But the most extraordinary is the way that I decide to take care of every aspect of myself.

The most important experience of my life is spending and enjoying time with my daugther. Gesselle and me love being together because we do many activities to have a good time. First, we wake up at the same time  every morning. That is when our daily routine starts. While she is getting ready for  school, we sing a song. The Turtle song is part of our daily life.  As a result, she goes faster and gets ready quickly. After her classes, we have lunch at home sometimes. On wekends, we usually go to a restaurant. During the meal, I can notice  the good job that I am doing as a mother. In other words, my daugther behavior makes me feel proud. A simple conversation between us can turn into an intervew. As soon as she discovers  a new word  or any new object, she asks me about it as if I had all the answers. I try to give her a good response, but I do not always  have them all. It is wonderful to see her take care of me when I am sick. All my illnesses disapear  with just a little touch with those beautifull hands. We respect each other no matter the situation. Our activities like  playing, dancing, studying, and going out together, reinforce the relationship  between me and my daughter.

My career is absolutely the most interesting aspect of my life. The process of discovering myself as a student is not easy, but I enjoy it anyway. In 2006 I decided to study English as a career. I chose to learn  English  because  i like it. However, I realize  that enjoying my career is not enough. Thus, I start to look at myself as a teacher and now, I am proud of my decision. I know I am able to teach and as a student, I am working very hard  to make the dream of being a good teacher come true. Discovering new habilities for teaching makes me  feel happy and in love with my career. As a apprentice, I have to fight against many things.  For example, my friends occasionally do not understand my effort. Also my family believe that success comes easily. I used to argue with my teacher because he assings me a lot of homework . Now, I know  that am a better student  because of him. I try to be happy during this procces and enjoy as much as I can. Everything is not just to have fun. As a case in point , it is  hard to study on Saturday night and Sunday evening, but this is a real students life and now I love it. I learned that being a good student takes patience to learn, time to perfect, and plenty of energy to keep on the track.

To sum, up  my pride and joy is that all the  aspects of myself such as family, friends, and career are in the correct place. Being a good mother  is what I like the most and what I live for. My daugther  is the center of my life. My friends are the rock that hold me when I am in need and the last but no least important, my career. My profession is my passion, to which I have dedicated a lot of time and effort. The word that I use to describe myself is extraordinary. This is  how I percieve my life, the wonderful experiences and friends I have, and the activities that I have been involved in. I thank God for being so generous with me. I am certain that the best is yet to come!
